Job Summary

Develop mechanical and technical skills and knowledge.   Maintain acceptable grades, attendance and performance ratings throughout the program as determined by shop supervisors, classroom training instructors and program coordinator.  Understand and perform within Empire’s conduct standards, work ethics and performance standards.  Must be willing to accept this position with NO guarantee of future employment.

ThinkBIG Apprentice Program: Empire Southwest partners with Mesa Community College to administer the ThinkBIG Apprentice Program, a two-year college-level curriculum which provides students with the education and skills necessary to become heavy-equipment diesel technicians. Program graduates receive an Associate in Applied Science Degree from Mesa Community College and Caterpillar Dealer Service Technician credentials, which are recognized by all Caterpillar dealers worldwide.

Final selections for this program will be made May 2017. This two-year program starts in August 2017 and runs continuously until May 2019. The program consists of 16-week semesters and each semester is broken into two sessions. The first session consists of eight-weeks of classroom instruction Monday-Friday.

The second session is an eight-week PAID internship where students work in one of Empire’s shops applying firsthand the skills they have just been taught in class.

Ideal candidates for this program:

High School graduates.

Technical school graduates.

Students enrolled in college.

Individuals with a military mechanical background.

Individuals with strong mechanical backgrounds and heavy equipment repair experience.

Important Dates in 2017:

January - March: Applications being accepted.

Applicants must complete assessment test at Mesa Community College to meet program requirements in Math and English. Applicants must also complete an exam administered by Empire which measures mechanical aptitude.

April/May2017: Interviews and final selection process.

May/June 2017: Accepted students who may need to take Math/English pre-requisites will start summer school.

August 2017: Program begins in conjunction with MCC Fall semester schedule.

Mesa Community College offers students financial aid, loans and grants for qualified individuals. Student medical insurance is available for purchase through MCC.

Essential Functions & Additional Responsibilities

  1. Maintain classroom and self-study training grades and curriculum to avoid disqualification from the program.
  2. Maintain attendance above minimum program standards.
  3. Maintain acceptable attitude and cooperation standards.
  4. Keep work area and tool boxes clean and orderly.
  5. Learn to use parts books, NPR, SIRS, SIS and other required literature and systems.
  6. Learn basic systems and component functions (electrical, hydraulic, engines and power trains).
  7. Learn to disassemble, clean, reassemble and install components and parts.
  8. Maintain company equipment – report repair needs to supervisor.
  9. Prepare reports including time cards, service reports and self-evaluations.
  10. Work safely at all times.  Adhere to all applicable safety policies.  Comply with all company policies, procedures, and standards..
  11. Own and maintain required personal tools.
  12. Learn and use Empire, Caterpillar and allied product procedures and systems.
  13. Maintain current MSHA card if work area requires.
  14. Must be willing to work overtime, weekends, and any shift as needed.
  15. Must be willing to travel to remote locations, other stores and customer job sites as needed.
  16. Communicate with proper individuals to clarify instructions or discuss scope or progress of job.
  17. Work within and promote corporate values.
  18. Comply with all company policies and procedures.
  19. Perform other duties as assigned.
  20. Must accomplish training and serve as a Green Belt in support of EMPIRE's Six Sigma program.
